Backend Python Engineer

Job description

A leading organization is seeking a Backend Python Engineer to develop and enhance backend services for a financial analytics application. This hands-on, mid-level engineering position is focused on Python development, SQL, cloud technologies, APIs, and data-intensive application functionality.

The ideal candidate has 3 to 5 years of software engineering experience and combines strong coding skills with practical problem solving. The engineer should be comfortable evaluating technical alternatives, identifying downstream impacts, and using AI-assisted development tools while maintaining independent engineering judgment.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and enhance backend application services using Python.
• Build and optimize database queries and data interactions using SQL and MySQL.
• Develop cloud-based application capabilities, preferably within Microsoft Azure.
• Build functionality supporting financial calculations, analytics, and predictive use cases.
• Work with Databricks within the application and data environment.
• Develop and support APIs and backend integrations.
• Contribute to event-driven integrations using technologies such as Azure Service Bus and Apache Kafka.
• Assess application dependencies and potential downstream impacts before implementing changes.
• Compare solution approaches and clearly identify technical trade-offs, risks, and limitations.
• Apply testing, code review, and defect-prevention practices to improve application quality.
• Distinguish implementation defects from issues caused by incomplete or incorrect requirements.
• Use approved AI-assisted development tools to support coding, testing, debugging, and code review.
• Communicate technical decisions, assumptions, risks, and solution approaches clearly to team members.

Required experience and skills

• Approximately 3 to 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong hands-on Python development skills.
• Strong SQL skills, including experience developing and troubleshooting database queries.
• Experience with MySQL is highly relevant.
• At least 1 year of hands-on cloud development experience.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure is preferred, although experience with another major cloud platform is acceptable.
• Strong understanding of backend software development and application design concepts.
• Experience with APIs and backend system integrations.
• Experience or familiarity with Databricks.
• Experience or familiarity with event-driven technologies such as Apache Kafka or Azure Service Bus.
• Experience using AI-assisted tools as part of software development workflows.
• Knowledge of automated and manual testing, code review, and software defect-prevention practices.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to evaluate multiple approaches and anticipate downstream effects.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts and decision-making processes effectively.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, software engineering, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
